Daily Reading

One of the best ways for children to practice their literacy skills over the summer is by reading daily. This can mean reading an appropriately challenging text independently or listening to a book being read out loud to them. Let’s enjoy reading this summer!

Students can login to myon.com to access over 6,000 enhanced digital books that are interesting, exciting, and appealing for young readers. Students can choose to read these books independently or have the computer read the book to them. Parents, guardians and other important adults, join in on the fun this summer and select a myON book to read to your child.

Fred Games

Fred is our Read Write Inc. frog who only speaks in sounds. Students listen to Fred’s sounds and then blend those sounds together to say a whole word. This is a critically important skill on the journey to becoming an accomplished reader. Writing challenge

Use the pictures from Imagine Forest to encourage your child to write this summer. Imagine Forest has over 85 interesting pictures to help children generate ideas and get motivated to write. Visit the webpage with your child and have them select a picture that’s interesting to him/her. Talk to your child about the picture to help him/her develop ideas and sentences. After talking, have your child write their sentences. Encourage him/her to use their Fred Fingers to spell unknown words.

Set 1 Sounds

If your child finished the school year learning Set 1 Sounds or in the Ditty or Red groups, he/she can participate in the following videos to continue learning their Set 1 sounds and practice reading and spelling words containing those sounds. Your child will need a pencil and a piece of paper to complete these lessons. Your child should watch and participate in all videos for each letter in one day. Videos are active until 17th August.
