There are many pros and cons of homework. Stress becomes even more apparent as students get into higher grade levels.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A <a href=\"https:\/\/static1.squarespace.com\/static\/55a558bbe4b066864fb69179\/t\/59f2309c692670b730d9ee81\/1509044391664\/MCHS+CS+Survey+Report+2017.pdf\">study<\/a> conducted on high school student&#8217;s experiences found that high-achieving students found that too much homework leads to sleep deprivation and other health problems such as:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Headaches<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Exhaustion<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Weight loss&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Stomach problems&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>More than half of students say that homework is their primary source of stress, and we know what stress can do on our bodies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It\u2019s been shown that excessive homework can lead to cheating. With too much homework, students end up copying off one another in an attempt to finish all their assignments.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Pro 2: Homework Helps to Reinforce Classroom Learning<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Homework is most effective when it allows students to revise what they learn in class. Did you know that students typically retain only 50% of the information teachers provide in class?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Students need to apply that information to learn it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Homework also helps students develop key skills that they\u2019ll use throughout their lives:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Accountability&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Autonomy<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Discipline<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Time management<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Self-direction<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Critical thinking<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Independent problem-solving<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>The skills learned in homework can then be applied to other subjects and practical situations in students&#8217; daily lives.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Con 2: Takes Away From Students Leisure Time<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Children need free time. This free time allows children to relax and explore the world that they are living in. This free time also gives them valuable skills they wouldn\u2019t learn in a classroom, such as riding a bike, reading a book, or socializing with friends and family.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Having leisure time teaches kids valuable skills that cannot be acquired when doing their homework at a computer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Plus, students need to get enough exercise. Getting exercise can improve cognitive function, which might be hindered by sedentary activities such as homework.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Pro 3: Homework Gets Parents Involved with Children\u2019s Learning<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Homework helps parents track what their children are learning in school.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Also allows parents to see what their children&#8217;s academic strengths and weaknesses are. Homework can alert parents to any learning difficulties that their children might have, enabling them to provide assistance and modify their child&#8217;s learning approach as necessary.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Parents who help their children with homework will lead to higher academic performance, better social skills and behaviour, and greater self-confidence in their children.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Con 3: Homework Is Not Always Effective<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Numerous researchers have attempted to evaluate the importance of homework and how it enhances academic performance. According to a <a href=\"https:\/\/visible-learning.org\/2014\/09\/john-hattie-interview-bbc-radio-4\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">study<\/a>, homework in primary schools has a minimal effect since students pursue unrelated assignments instead of solidifying what they have already learned.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Mental health <a href=\"https:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/story\/life\/health-wellness\/2021\/08\/16\/students-mental-health-time-get-rid-homework-schools\/5536050001\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">experts<\/a> agree heavy homework loads have the capacity to do more harm than good for students.
