{"id":4030,"date":"2022-10-28T15:12:32","date_gmt":"2022-10-28T15:12:32","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/oxfordlearning.com\/what-ontarios-2022-eqao-results-mean-for-students-in-every-province\/"},"modified":"2025-07-02T16:04:32","modified_gmt":"2025-07-02T16:04:32","slug":"what-the-2022-eqao-results-mean-for-your-child","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/oxfordlearning.com\/what-the-2022-eqao-results-mean-for-your-child\/","title":{"rendered":"What Ontario&#8217;s 2022 EQAO Results Mean for Students in Every Province."},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Ontario&#8217;s EQAO results were released last week and show a decline in student achievement across all measures. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eqao.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Education Quality and Accountability Office<\/a> (EQAO) provides Ontario student assessment data. The 2021-2022 EQAO results provide a snapshot of how students are doing after two years of pandemic learning disruptions. <strong>While these results may be based in Ontario, they have implications for students <em>in every province across Canada.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">&nbsp;<strong>What is the EQAO?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The EQAO is a set of standardized tests administered by schools in grades 3, 6, 9 and 10. The tests measure reading, writing, and math performance against a set of provincial standards.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Grade 3: Assessment of Reading, Writing and Mathematics&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Grade 6: Assessment of Reading, Writing and Mathematics<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Grade 9: Assessment of Mathematics; and<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Grade 10: The Ontario Secondary School Literacy Test (OSSLT)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>The EQAO tests give information about how students are performing when compared to a standard for their level. As well as providing the province insights about the provincial curriculum, these tests work to ensure that students are getting a high-quality education and to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eqao.com\/about-eqao\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">keep public education accountable to taxpayers<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>While the assessment results don\u2019t affect students\u2019 individual overall grades, they can, however, point to trends in student performance and indicate trouble areas. Let&#8217;s take a look at what the current results indicate. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">2022 EQAO Results At a Glance<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>This is the first year since the pandemic that students could take these <a href=\"https:\/\/oxfordlearning.com\/pros-cons-of-standardized-tests\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">standardized tests<\/a>. Across the board, student performance results were lower than results from the previous test.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Third-Grade Results: <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Reading: small drop from the previous test: 77% down to 73%<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Writing: larger drop from the previous test:&nbsp; 72% down to 65%<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Math: minor drop from the previous testing year: 60 down to 59%<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>Only<strong> 59 <\/strong>% of Grade 3 students met the province\u2019s math standard.<\/p>\n<cite>Toronto.ctvnews.ca<\/cite><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Sixth-Grade Results:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Reading: increase from the previous testing year: 85%, up from 83%<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Writing: results stayed the same from the previous testing year: 84%<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Math: results dropped from the previous testing year: 50% down to <strong>47%<\/strong><br><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>Only <strong>47% <\/strong>of Grade 6 students met the provincial math standard.<\/p>\n<cite><a href=\"https:\/\/www.thestar.com\/politics\/provincial\/2022\/10\/20\/covid-19-pandemic-hit-math-achievement-the-hardest-ontario-eqao-testing-shows.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Thestar.com<\/a><\/cite><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Ninth-Grade Math Test Results<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Results for the math test only: Math results <strong>dropped <\/strong>from the previous testing year: 75% down to 52%<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>Only <strong>52%<\/strong> of Grade 9 students met the provincial math standard. <\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Tenth Grade Literacy<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The tenth-grade literacy test known as the OSSLT will take place from <strong>Wednesday, November 2,<\/strong> to <strong>Wednesday, December 7,<\/strong> 2022, with individual student results reported by end of January 2023. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eqao.com\/the-assessments\/osslt\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">source<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"> What Every Province Can Learn from Ontario\u2019s EQAO Results<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The assessment results show a steady decline in the overall performance for all students at the levels tested. Math scores are down. Reading performance has declined.
