When students think they are born with a particular skill, they are less likely to put in additional effort. They practise less, study less, and try less. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Instead of recognizing students for being naturally gifted, focus on offering praise for the effort they put in to reach their goals. Praise can be an extremely important factor in a student\u2019s growth. It is used to motivate, encourage and inspire children.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Avoiding Failure<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Too much praise can also work the opposite way.  If children are consistently praised for something that they essentially have no control over, they will feel powerless and unable to find a solution when they don\u2019t succeed.  This can lead to <a href=\"https:\/\/oxfordlearning.com\/the-role-of-failure-in-learning\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">a fear of failure,<\/a> which damages self-confidence. Instead of saying, \u201cyou are so smart,\u201d try \u201cyou worked really hard. Awesome job!\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Researching Success &amp; Failure<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>In <a href=\"http:\/\/socialpsychonline.com\/2016\/07\/psychology-success\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">one study<\/a>,  psychologists gave 5th graders two separate tests: in the first test, students were either praised for being really smart or praised for their hard work. In the second test, students experienced a setback. The researchers noted that students who received praise for their intelligence took the setback negatively. The students who were praised for their effort were more likely to take the test home to practise working on the questions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Two Different Mindsets<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.chronicle.com\/article\/carol-dwecks-attitude\/\">Stanford psychologist Carol Dweck<\/a>&#8216;s&nbsp;research on effort and success found that people tend to have one of two different mindsets when it comes to ability\u2014 either a <strong>fixed<\/strong> or a <strong>growth <\/strong>mindset.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>People with a a <strong>fixed mindset <\/strong>believe that you are born with natural talents and abilities or not.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>People with a <strong>growth mindset<\/strong> believe that persistence, effort, determination, and practice are the keys to overcoming any obstacle. Check out these tips to help students <a href=\"https:\/\/oxfordlearning.com\/growth-mindset-tips-for-parents\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">develop a growth mindset<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">2 Ideas to Praise Effort Effectively:<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Praise Process, Not The Outcome:  Praising students for working hard on a project, or putting aside time every night to study for a test helps students understand the connection between the effort they put in and the results that they get. When a child comes home excited with a great mark, say, &#8220;you deserve it! You worked really hard for that mark.&#8221; Praise the entire process including concentration, self-correction, and strategies used.<\/li><li>Praise Specifically and Sincerely. Children love attention and feedback. However, children can recognize insincere praise. It can be easy to praise a child simply to boost their self-esteem. Be <a href=\"https:\/\/www.parents.com\/toddlers-preschoolers\/development\/social\/how-to-praise-your-children\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">as specific as possible<\/a> to make the praise meaningful to the child.<\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Praising for Success<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Praising effort rather than skills or natural ability helps students of all ages learn that the work they apply leads to the results they want.
