Here are a few ideas!<\/h3>\n<hr \/>\n<div class=\"ol-point\">\n<div class=\"ol-point__img\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/oxfordlearning.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/one.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" \/><\/div>\n<div class=\"ol-point__copy\">\n<h3>Make it a game.<\/h3>\n<p>Whether it\u2019s old-school card and board games (my younger daughter chose Yahtzee for Family Game Night a few weeks ago, and learned a lot), a puzzle or something more high-tech, many kids are drawn into hands-on activities, especially when there\u2019s an element of competition with a parent or sibling.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"ol-point\">\n<div class=\"ol-point__img\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/oxfordlearning.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/two.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" \/><\/div>\n<div class=\"ol-point__copy\">\n<h3>Put screens to work for you.<\/h3>\n<p>We know how much kids love their devices, and there are tons of apps and games that help reinforce and teach Math concepts. I did a quick Twitter call for suggestions and parents raved about games like <a href=\"https:\/\/www.prodigygame.com\/Canada\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Prodigy<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.mathville.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Mathville<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.dreambox.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Dreambox<\/a>. I\u2019m also a big fan of IXL for practising skills.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"ol-point\">\n<div class=\"ol-point__img\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/oxfordlearning.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/three.png\" alt=\"\" \/><\/div>\n<div class=\"ol-point__copy\">\n<h3>Show them the relevance<\/h3>\n<p>Kids are turned off when they don\u2019t see a purpose for what they\u2019re learning, so it\u2019s important to constantly show them how math is useful in real life. Involve them in activities like cooking and baking (remember our little Canadian kids need to use metric measurement), telling time, checking temperature and using money. Little ones can sort coins, older ones can help estimate the grocery bill while shopping.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"ol-point\">\n<div class=\"ol-point__img\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/oxfordlearning.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/four.png\" alt=\"\" \/><\/div>\n<div class=\"ol-point__copy\">\n<h3>Watch your words<\/h3>\n<p>Parents may try to be helpful by saying \u201cI was never good at math\u201d, or \u201cYou take after me\u201d, but instead encourage kids to embrace challenges and see the fun in growing their brains. On a related note, I\u2019m not a big fan of the word \u201cdrill\u201d (though it\u2019s an important aspect of learning math), as it makes me think of home repair and dental work. \u201cPractice\u201d seems much more positive, and kids can connect that to sports and other areas where they know they have to put in the work to see results.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"ol-point\">\n<div class=\"ol-point__img\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/oxfordlearning.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/five.png\" alt=\"\" \/><\/div>\n<div class=\"ol-point__copy\">\n<h3>Access one of the best resources you have \u2013 your child\u2019s teacher!<\/h3>\n<p>A lot of the math programs I pull from at school have suggestions for games and ideas that can be sent home (most recently a \u201cRotating Spoons\u201d game to play at the dinner table to work on quarter, half, and three quarter turns), but I often pass because I don\u2019t want to overwhelm families. If you\u2019re looking for something to use to reinforce what\u2019s being taught at the moment, don\u2019t hesitate to ask the teacher if he or she has any ideas. I\u2019m also happy to loan out manipulatives that families may not have, like teaching clocks, miras, base ten blocks and geometric solids \u2013 as long as I know they\u2019ll be returned!<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"ol-point\">\n<div class=\"ol-point__img\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/oxfordlearning.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/six.png\" alt=\"\" \/><\/div>\n<div class=\"ol-point__copy\">\n<h3>Connect Math and Language<\/h3>\n<p>If your avid reader is a reluctant mathematician, literature may provide some inspiration. Greg Tang\u2019s books are very popular, and there are picture books and nonfiction texts to support many different math concepts. To complement our study of time this year a parent donated Me Counting Time (Joan Sweeney) and Get Up And Go! (Stuart J. Murphy) which the kids love.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<h5 class=\"centeralign\">With a bit of enthusiasm on your part (fake it if you have to!) these suggestions should help your child to enjoy learning math even more!<\/h5>\n<div class=\"nb-box-hollow\">\n<div class=\"nb-row margin-b-0\">\n<div class=\"nb-column nb-medium-4\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/oxfordlearning.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/87174146.jpg\" \/><\/div>\n<div class=\"nb-column nb-medium-8 margin-b-0\">\n<h4 class=\"h3\">Math Literacy<\/h4>\n<p>The process of developing literacy skills is fairly well known.
