There are tons of fun ways to help children learn when they\u2019re not in school.<\/p>\n<p>Evenings, weekends, holidays\u2014they all offer families great opportunities to spend time together, have fun, and continue learning<\/p>\n<p><strong>Here are 5 fun ways to help kids learn!<\/strong><\/p>\n<h2 style=\"padding-top: 1em;\">1. Get Creative<\/h2>\n<hr \/>\n<p>Art helps smarts! Whether it\u2019s crafts or play-doh, playing an instrument, acting, writing poetry, painting, or building model cars\u2026 art can help kids of all ages tap into their creative side and get their brains working. <strong>Try this creative activity:<\/strong><\/p>\n<div class=\"outline-box\">\n<h3>Musical Water Glasses<\/h3>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone post-half\" src=\"https:\/\/oxfordlearning.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/12\/water-glass.jpg\" alt=\"Water in Glasses\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>Gather your supplies! You\u2019ll need:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Sturdy glasses from the same set<\/li>\n<li>Food colouring<\/li>\n<li>Wooden spoon<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>This is a great activity, especially for younger children!<\/p>\n<div class=\"clear-both\"><\/div>\n<p>(idea via <a href=\"http:\/\/littlepageturners.blogspot.co.uk\/2009\/09\/making-music-part-3-new-twist-on.html\">Little Page Turners<\/a>)<\/p>\n<p>Fill the glasses with different water levels and add a few drops of food colouring. This is a great opportunity to review colours with children and even fractions with older children (which glass looks like it\u2019s half-full, which is a quarter full?)<\/p>\n<p>Now use the wooden spoon to make music!<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<h2 style=\"padding-top: 1em;\">2. Get Cooking<\/h2>\n<hr \/>\n<p>Children love to feel like little helpers, so why not let them help with grocery shopping or cooking meals? The great thing about these activities is that they help with an integral (and often difficult) school subject: math.<\/p>\n<p>Have your child decide which produce is a better bargain, or ask them to measure ingredients. Not only will they quickly learn that\u00a0math is useful, but you also get to eat what you make!<\/p>\n<p><strong>Here are some kid-friendly recipes for everyone to enjoy:<\/strong><\/p>\n<div class=\"outline-box post-half\">\n<p style=\"margin-top: 0px;\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" style=\"width: 100%; height: auto;\" src=\"https:\/\/oxfordlearning.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/12\/fruit-smoothie.jpg\" alt=\"Recipe Image\" \/><\/p>\n<h4>Fruit Smoothie<\/h4>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.eatrightontario.ca\/en\/Articles\/Child-Toddler-Nutrition\/Cooking-with-Kids.aspx#.VIn952TF800\">Eat Right Ontario<\/a> has a great Fruit Smoothie that you can tailor to your child\u2019s taste. Let your kids choose from an assortment of fruits like berries and bananas!<\/p>\n<p><strong>Blend:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>2 cups (500 mL) milk or fortified soy milk<\/li>\n<li>2 cups (500 mL) fruit (any of: sliced banana, mango, nectarine, frozen raspberries, blueberries or strawberries, canned pineapple or peaches)<\/li>\n<li>1 cup (250 mL) ice cubes<\/li>\n<li>3\/4 cup (175 mL) plain lower fat (2% M.F. or less) yogurt<\/li>\n<li>1\/2 cup (125 mL) frozen orange juice concentrate<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"outline-box post-half\">\n<p style=\"margin-top: 0px;\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" style=\"width: 100%; height: auto;\" src=\"https:\/\/oxfordlearning.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/12\/coconut-balls.jpg\" alt=\"Recipe Image\" \/><\/p>\n<h4>No-Bake Doughnut Holes<\/h4>\n<p><strong>Mix together:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>1 cup chocolate protein powder<\/li>\n<li>1 cup peanut butter<\/li>\n<li>1\/2 cup honey<\/li>\n<li>1\/2 cup oatbran<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Roll into small balls and coat in flaked coconut.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"clear-both\"><\/div>\n<h2 style=\"padding-top: 1em;\">3. Get Outside<\/h2>\n<hr \/>\n<p>Fresh air is not to be underestimated! The outdoors provides a natural playground for children to learn and grow, not to mention exercise helps keep the body and brain fit.<\/p>\n<p>Go on a walk around the block; hike in a nearby Conservation Area; go swimming at a public pool. You don\u2019t even have to leave the house &#8211; plant a vegetable garden together, build a snow fort, or play basketball in the driveway.\u00a0Regardless of the activity, getting outside means kids spend less time in front of screens, and that helps keep their bodies and minds active.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Here are some activity that combine intellectual and physical education:<\/strong><\/p>\n<div class=\"outline-box post-half\">\n<p style=\"margin-top: 0px;\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" style=\"width: 100%; height: auto;\" src=\"https:\/\/oxfordlearning.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/12\/sundial.jpg\" alt=\"Children Outside\" \/><\/p>\n<h4>Sundial Craft<\/h4>\n<p><strong>Materials you\u2019ll need:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>12 x 12 piece of heavy cardstock<\/li>\n<li>block of wood<\/li>\n<li>thumb tacks<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>To build the sundial:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Fold the cardstock corner-to-corner, and cut the card in half.<\/li>\n<li>Fold a flap on the bottom of the card to tack into the piece of wood.<\/li>\n<li>Attach it to the wooden block, making sure the triangle is straight up and down.<\/li>\n<li>Place the sundial on a flat surface with sun exposure.<\/li>\n<li>Every hour, mark off where the shadow is cast.<\/li>\n<li>You might even want to paint a nature design on the wood block.<\/li>\n<li>Remember to keep the sundial facing the same direction so your hour marks will be accurate<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"outline-box post-half\">\n<p style=\"margin-top: 0px;\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" style=\"width: 100%; height: auto;\" src=\"https:\/\/oxfordlearning.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/12\/children-outside.jpg\" alt=\"Children Outside\" \/><\/p>\n<h4>Ice Candles<\/h4>\n<p>In the winter months, inspiration for child-friendly activities sometimes runs dry. Turn your backyard into a Winter Wonderland with these beautiful little decorations!<\/p>\n<p><strong>Materials you\u2019ll need:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Small plastic tub or bucket<\/li>\n<li>Tin can or small plastic cup<\/li>\n<li>Small candle<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>To make the candles:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Create a mold. Fill the bucket or pail with cold tap water and place a tin can in the center, weighing it down with small rocks<\/li>\n<li>Put the bucket outside and wait for it to completely freeze<\/li>\n<li>Remove the ice from the bucket (if it sticks, run warm water on the surface of the bucket to loosen the ice free)<\/li>\n<li>Remove the tin can inside (similarly to the bucket, you can loosen by filling the tin with warm water)<\/li>\n<li>Place the candle in the bottom of the hole the can created<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>You\u2019ve got your ice candle! Get Techy<\/h2>\n<hr \/>\n<p>It seems to be a hot topic within parenting circles &#8211; whether or not to expose your children to technology, and if so, how often? Just like everything else, technology isn\u2019t bad when moderated\u2026 some schools are even taking advantage of what technology has to offer our children. There are some exciting learning opportunities within interactive children\u2019s games!<\/p>\n<p>Spend a rainy Saturday afternoon playing video games, like <a href=\"https:\/\/slot27.id\/\"><strong>https:\/\/slot27.id\/<\/strong><\/a>, with your child. Let them show you how to play, asking plenty of questions. Draw practical connections between the game and how things work in daily life.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone post-half\" src=\"https:\/\/oxfordlearning.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/12\/children-gaming.jpg\" alt=\"Children Gaming\" \/><\/p>\n<p>For the younger ones, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.leapfrog.com\/en-us\/store\/c\/_\/N-1z141oo?utm_source=nonlearningpath_emails\">Leap Pad<\/a> provides a very user-friendly tablet with an endless amount of educational games to purchase physically or through their online store.<\/p>\n<p>For children a little bit older, there are many options available on all different consoles like your computer, traditional video games consoles, and tablets. Here are a few to explore: <a href=\"http:\/\/littlebigplanet.playstation.com\">Little Big Planet<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bigbrainacademy.com\">Big Brain Academy<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.scholastic.ca\/magicschoolbus\/games\/\">Magic School Bus Activity Lab<\/a>.<\/p>\n<div class=\"clear-both\"><\/div>\n<h2 style=\"padding-top: 1em;\">5. Get Reading<\/h2>\n<hr \/>\n<div class=\"outline-box post-half no-outline-box\">\n<p>It\u2019s not by chance that some of the first memories children retain are of their parents\u2019 reading them bedtime stories. Aside from improving literacy, getting lost in a story builds character through the exploration of the imagination. Creativity and the ability to think \u2018outside the box\u2019 are enriched through reading. These are skills that will help your child throughout their adult life.<\/p>\n<p>If your child is reluctant to read, remember that there are many different forms of reading \u2013 it\u2019s doesn\u2019t have to be a long story or novel. Try going to a local library or bookstore and browse the graphic novels and comic books.
